Week 1

About Week 1

Is it true you are what you eat? We wanted to know. As a generating exercise we began Week 1 by writing down everything we ate. From documented vending machine raids to an alarming consumption of Nutella and artisan cheeses, each one of us left behind a unique dietary fingerprint of one week in each of our lives. How different are we? How much are we the same? Do any of these choices accurately reflect our values? What about yours?

-three bites of leftover, cold quiche (bacon, tomato, gorganzola, thyme, onion)

-two eggs over-medium, one sausage patty, two of the best buttermilk pancakes in my LIFE (no joke, Original Pancake House in Wilmette!), a large glass of freshly-squeezed OJ (reminded me of Spain), hash browns with habanero cheese & pico de gallo, like four cups of coffee (black)

-Chinese takeout leftovers– Ginger chicken with white rice, eaten with chopsticks

-no green beer, surprisingly? Some St. Patricks Day this was…

-7 ish glasses of water

KELLEN’S FOOD JOURNAL – MONDAY

Eats :

peanut butter and raspberry jam on rye toast
-three strawberries
-small mug of green tea
-medium cup of peppermint tea
-handful of almonds
-a clementine
-rye sandwich with ham, sprouts and caesar dressing
-one organic apple
-leftover seafood fried rice chinese takeout
-one 18g bar of milk chocolate
-a chocolate-chocolate chip cookie
-approximately 15-20 blue corn tortilla chips and a cup (ish) of hummus
-probably around 4 cups of water
-single vanilla vodka and cranberry (cleaning out the liquor cabinet!)
-a bite of a peppermint patty

As I was contemplating these things I ate, I realized about 5 to maybe 10 chips were scarfed down unnoticed. Funny how junk food / vegging out so easily gets tuned out. I am now becoming more aware of quantities of food. I don’t know how calorie counter dieters do it– I just eat until I’m satiated! or… incredibly full. I hear the eastern European women in my life saying, “Eat! Eat more!”

What I used to think: forget the school of thought that measures your plate. Just eat– enjoy– savor.
What I am starting to contemplate: what is the process really like if I document every single bite of food or sip of liquid during my day? What happens to your brain at 100% of body awareness? What types of food and drink goes unnoticed and undocumented throughout the day? The cookie my friend gave me that her mom baked fresh… my daily water intake… a piece of Peppermint Patty handed to me by my husband– of course, I will eat it. It is in front of me. This is also something to do with being Southern– having sweets around in bowls, constantly having food out and put in front of me. When my huge ass cajun family gets together, we all throw any dietary restrictions out the window for the holiday. Chips and dips and brownies and beers are just opened and downed with no thought. What would it be like if I had a gluten allergy and shaped my entire eating experience around foods I brought instead of the foods cooked by my grandmommy? I’ve been through the vegetarian stints around the meat-eaters in my life. I’m beginning to think more about limitations with food that I am not familiar or comfortable or knowledgeable about.

Ah, and another thing: Sophie Calle’s work. A French artist / philosopher, she did a few things with food– eating a monochromatic diet, a different color each day (red bell pepper, tomato sauce, steak tartar on one, nectarines and mangoes and shrimps the next… super interesting). She also is notorious for following people– one project being buying everything someone in the supermarket bought and bringing the foods home. I love this notion of digging into a stranger’s narrative through the lens of the food they just bought. Reading what my co-belts-of-fats are eating makes me hyper aware of what I’m eating, almost like surveillance, like someone’s following me. The Feds are onto my stomach…

…as far as the journaling goes, I’m getting self-conscious as to what I’m eating. Is this stopping how I eat? No, not really. Is it affecting how I perceive my diet as normal? Yes, yes it is.

I am a large human being that works out on a regular basis. I need sustenance. It’s a little embarrassing to see the waves of feeding frenzies that occur right after workouts. My body overrides any sense of combination of and order for foods, going for the nutrients and proteins it needs. Taste is irrelevant–thus the fish tacos and spoonfuls of Nutella that follow thirty seconds later, for instance.

This journal is illuminating for my diet, but I’m trying to not have it affect my diet because someone can see what I eat now. This may be an impossible task, but I’m keeping this in mind for tomorrow and the rest of the week.

Kellen’s Food Journal : TUESDAY

Eats!

Honey Bunches of Oat cereal, organic milk, two sliced strawberries
one B vitamin
a short glass of water

samples of cheese:
Appalachia (raw cow – VA)
Evalon (raw goat – WI)
Dante (raw sheep – WI)
Raspberry Bellavitano (cow – WI – a cheese with a rind soaked in raspberry ale!)
Pecorino Fioretto (sheep – Italy)
Cave Man Blue (raw cow – WA)

four cups of coffee, black
four tall glasses of water
peanut butter and raspberry jam on an everything bagel

two cups of Far East box couscous, pine nut flavor
a cup and a half (ish) of steamed frozen cauliflower and broccoli, seasoned with butter and chili paste
one chicken breast, baked with BBQ seasoning and vegetable oil
(husband cooked dinner– yeah, partners who make foods and do dishes for their graduate school partners!)

PS–my job as a cheesemonger might make these lists interesting… the cheeses I taste on the clock are either to gauge the quality before I send them out wholesale to restaurants, if they are new / if I haven’t tasted them before, if I just split the wheel (magic), or if they are my favorites. Best job evs.

Moe’s Food Journal Tuesday

-water, two bowls of cheerios with unsweetened almond milk, black tea

-cup of rice, lentil soup (green lentils, celery, carrot, onion) with extra extra hot sauce
-3, 6oz glasses of water
-cranberry apple muffin, coffee with a little whole milk
-one Jamaican Jerk Chicken patty
-A small side of fried sweet plantains
-Water, black tea,

-Three big spoonfuls of Smucker’s Natural Creamy peanut butter, each dipped in honey, a 1/4 block of Kraft extra sharp cheddar

– Two 8 oz glasses of water

I think the one food that has consistently made it into all our journals has been peanut butter. It is a very significant and powerful food.

Mike’s Food Journal (Tuesday)

-6 glasses of water

-1 bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats (with 1% milk)

-1/2 box of wheat spaghetti and Ragu Veggie Pasta Sauce

-2 Panera Bread Bowls (1 French Onion, 1 Chicken Noodle)*

-2 cups of black coffee

-2 dozen tater tots (with a ranch/bbq/honey dijon dipping sauces)

-1 Left Hand Stout

*At Panera Bread today, the worker accidentally served Chicken Noodle in a bread bowl to me when I asked for French Onion. She apologized and made my French Onion order on the spot. However…she asked me if I would like the Chicken Noodle order as well. I knew she would throw it out if I said no. The Midwesterner in me couldn’t allow that to happen, so I accepted both bread bowls with equal parts excitement and extreme self-consciousness. I finished both soups and ate what I like to think of as the saturation rings of the bread bowl (the interior of the bread that has been sopped with soup), leaving the bottom of each bowl and their respective top plugs of bread.

This was a serendipitous moment that only would have happened now that I am keeping a food journal. I’m thinking about running along with doing my Upper Body Lift Day for this Wednesday because of those damn bread bowls…

Moe’s Food Journal Wednesday

IMG_1416 IMG_1417
1/3 a cup Quaker oats, water, Golden raisins, cinnamon, black tea

-a handful of honey oat pretzel twists eaten by dipping in peanut butter

-whole wheat everything bagel, toasted, with turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo & mustard
-Coffee with a little whole milk
-a small bag of cheddar goldfish
-a small bag of trail mix, unsalted, with yogurt bits
-A bag of plain m&ms
-A cup of white rice with lentil soup (carrot, lentils, celery, onion) w/ extra extra hot sauce
– a tablespoon of lemon curd

-three cups of Water

I woke up today and I really wanted a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Like really bad. I kind of stood dazed debating what to do because while I had the pb & j I did not have any bread. And considering the day before I borrowed two pieces of bread from my roommate, I thought I would abstain and just eat what I had. Which was oatmeal. I skipped bringing my lunch to work because I’m really sick by now of the lentil soup I made on Sunday and ate a bagel from La Bagel Delight which makes the bomb bagels. When I bought my midday coffee today I didn’t have money to pay the clerk at the deli but I go there often so he let it slide. Also I had an atypical junk food binge in lieu of a proper dinner today. Vending machines!!!!! I love the caption”Since time began everybody used nuts as a source of food.” No one told these guys peanuts aren’t really nuts. But really… who gives a shit. When I got home I was still hungry because I ate m&m’s for dinner so I ate another bowl of lentil soup this time with borrowed already cooked white rice from my roommate and not the brown rice which I consistently keep cooking without adding enough water so it turns out crunchy and grainy. Then I wanted something sweet so I ate some lemon curd. Also the only bowel movement I made today was really fucking cute. It reminded me of a baby manatee.

Mike Food Journal (Wednesday)

20130320_223728

-6 glasses of water

-4 cups of black coffee

-1 bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats (with 1% skim milk)

-1 cup of peanut butter

-1/2 box of wheat spaghetti with Ragu Veggie Pasta Sauce

-2 bowls of Grandma Graves’s Soup

  • Chicken broth (6 cans 14.5 oz cans)
  • 2 cups chopped carrots
  • 1/2 a head of cabbage, chopped
  • 2 cups of chopped celery
  • 1/2 a pack of peas
  • 4 tomatoes, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Dump all into a pot and heat until ready

-2 Belgian Waffles with real maple syrup

-1 slice of homemade meatloaf

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup of quick oats
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 can of pasta sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cajun seasoning
  • Bake at 350 for 30 minutes; pour second half of pasta sauce on top and bake for an additional 30 minutes

Like Moe, my mainstay seems to be peanut butter. It’s such a quick snack to eat right out of the jar. The other, for me, is cereal–particularly Honey Bunches of Oats. I dig the clusters.

Again, I blame my feeding frenzies on working out. It was Upper Body Day today and the I need food! override is just too strong. I want to note that I have not gained any weight with this regimen–I will notify any fluctuation of weight from here on out. If anything, I’ve lost weight since I work steadily throughout the day, every day, on everything…all the time.

four cups of water

Moe’s Food Journal Thursday

-2 eggs over easy with salt and pepper, one piece of wheat bread, 2 cups black tea, water (9:30am)

-veg lomein with fried rice, small wonton soup with hot mustard, 2 cups of water (2:30pm)

-one large red velvet whoopie pie, coffee (7:00pm)

-A slice on cheese pizza, a Bag of peanut butter pretzels (11pm)

There were a few times today where I thought either…don’t eat that because you have to write it down or YES eat that and don’t write it down. Because I want this week to reflect without any censor all of my impulses I literally went with my gut. What you see is what I eat. But writing everything down has done one significant thing so far… it has made me considering what I eat. Not change, but consider.  Is this good for me? Why does everything I eat have to be good for me? Where did this come from? What are these ingredients? Who made this for me? Can I afford this? Why did I buy this if I can’t afford this? Who else might be eating this right now? Does this taste good? If doesn’t taste good why won’t I stop eating it? What makes something “bad” for me? Do I deserve to feel bad if I eat something I think is”bad”?  I keep thinking about that saying “You are what you eat.” And wondered if I was.

Thursday Foods for Kellen

Eats:

1/2 of an everything bagel
two cups of black coffee
four glasses of water
cheese samples: Surchoix gruyere, Prairie Breeze, Raspberry Bellavitano, manchego gran reserva, bucheron, asiago fresco, three cheese curds, Sar Vecchio, the leftover rind on a cupcake paper of rochetta robiola (a top three in my cheese book–hence the eating of the rind off the paper it’s packaged in, any time I get the chance)
one piece of brioche bread
a glass of “chocolate wine”
ketchup, french fries, and one veggie Chicago-style hotdog (sports peppers, tomato, pickle spear, celery salt, mustard, poppy-seed bun) / (you should take fake sausages / bacon at their word) / (tastes like veggie lips and anuses) / (with less guilt!)

I ate terribly today. Thirsty as hell all day. Also have not been sleeping the proper amount of hours needed for a slumber fiend like myself, aka I wake up at the ungodly hour of six and immediately create beef for everything in my life, aka cereal is hard to put together (beef), and takes time to slurp (more beef), therefore I’ll just eat a bite of a bagel on my way to the train (it’s cold as fuck outside/ beefbeefbeef)? That leads me to chopping off way too huge slices of Prairie Breeze cheddar to munch on the clock, which too much cheese normally makes me mucus-y and even more hungry. I rush from work to a bogus hair color session (girl shit) that had me stuck in a chair for three fucking hours with nothing to satisfy my lack of lunch except chocolate wine? Hell, I had to try it somehow– I’m never gonna buy an entire bottle. Not to mention, I was reading about Escoffier and how his invention of veal stock for steak, meat, mushroom, potato and overall umami flavors’ sauces changed the way French people ate… are you fucking kidding me? Reading that as the foil in my hair fries my hair follicles, fries, hmmm, I should get fries after this, anything fried, or use the chicken bones in my freezer to make a stock and a risotto? No, just fries.

But a veggie hotdog? Seriously, what was I thinking?

-1 cup of black tea

-2 bowls of Grandma Graves’s Soup

-1 Turkey Burger (fried egg, raw onions, no cheese, with the rest of the works) at Epic Burger

-1/2 a bag of french fries (from Epic Burger)

Two things come to mind right now. One, I fall asleep before I post the day’s food journal because I realize I’m eating up until the time I fall asleep. Maybe not with a spoonful of peanut butter in my mouth as I pass out…but close. Second, I tend to be a mad snacker. I like to take breaks from working on something at home and eat a little something something. It’s decent stuff, for the most part–though once my jar of Nutella runs out, I ain’t buying no more of that stuff for a while.

With money and time being a little tight, I miss green stuff. I’ve been eating off reserves from my kitchen, when what I need to do is go grocery shopping for some fresh produce. It may not be this week that I’m journaling but, looking at my records thus far, I’m in dire need of some kale, broccoli, swiss chard, green peppers, jalapeños, and turnip greens in my life.

Yesterday is a blur. The recall of what I’ve eaten has taken a mental toll on me in some respects. I’m self-conscious of what I’m eating and yet, I’m happy when I’m eating it. It’s the equivalent of having a scoreboard following you. Every time you take a bite the scoreboard DINGS! another point for all to see.

The recipe of a given day–a Mike du jour–is both amusing and nauseating. I love it when I eat it, but someone else? We’ll see. Our stomachs are as unique as our personalities.

Belt of Fat Rehearsal Challenge (Week 1): Domino’s Pizza Eating Competition

For their first group challenge, the Eaters of Belt of Fat have devised possibly the first networked eating competition. 3 Eaters in 3 different states each with a Domino’s Pizza to devour. The completion time for the first Eater to finish their pie sets the time limit for the automatic writing session to follow–the other two must drop their slice and get writing about the state of their mind and body from the challenge.

Moe’s Domino Pizza Experience

Crust & dumb eating food, sick in a good way question mark, oh yeah feel’s good to be a sick boy. pepperoni jabroni, why did I think this was a good idea I think that every time. A well placed burp . Oh yeah I didn’t win. Did it matter. Got he shake rattle and roll. How do people do this again? Why do people do this again one large pizza. How many calories? Will I eat again today. My jaw… yeah. My jaw hurts. When should your jaw ever hurt. I didn’t get punched. Are we there yet? Are we not men? I’m not full, was I eating? The lemonade made the difference. Where did it go? How did Mike do it? Why can’t I do it? Is this necessary. Goddamn… crust right…? It’s the crust that killed me. Chew & Chew & Chew. The crust, underneath, a sign, metaphor, a clue, a way to give it perspective. The crust was the hardest part… but whats underneath. 3 pizzas, in 3 states, all the same, in every way. Did it taste good? Does it matter? What the fuck did I win? Why so many questions? Who cares? It’s just food. How many people do this? No more questions. The burp, I like, the burp is your redemption, your second wind, your release.A breath of fresh air. I look for it, feel it, buried in my gut, and inarticulate exclamation. I am, right, I. Something that Norma Mailer said about ego. Does this mean anything more than what it is? I guess we’ll find out, running out of steam & space. Thoughts that came to mind: 1) Why 2) How will I balance this 3) Is this necessary 4) I am dumb 5) I think that’s it. I’m gonna win, I’m not gonna win. Does winning make it better? Does winning even matter?

Shakira wherever whenever – toally getting grease and msg or what the fuck ever greased in my body – hungover sniffles the bell peppers were a great idea skin absorbing grease and cheese I cant eat fast to save my life – I’m the slowest eater in the world. Pepperoni belches want to throw up for a second yet also body needs cheese & bread to counter balance last nights drinking kareoke scheme. The pizza reminds me of when back in SM Bear & I would order Dominos when we wanted a lazy night in with a movie– ranch, sri racha– I ate more than half of this large pizza and I could go further still its just the pace – slow & steady wins no race of speed of timing pizza reminds me of blowjobs when trying to stuff my face with a stack of 2 slices in my face its like that moment when your face is being fucked an almost gag but needing speed needing to stuff more theres an end result couldnt keep up – couldnt get to the place where my box began to look empty – I just want to go lay at the river & chill breath, drink more water the crust on dominos pizza is pretty gross– just chock full of sugar & corn & mystery powder. I dont know if I can keep up with these dudes – with huge appetites oh but in a drinking contest that I’d have a chance at. Maybe not beer chugging but endurance training — I’ve never been strongest at speed in running, in being 1st or early or hell on time I can write fast enough but shit the doubt – the digestion – muscles ache, soul is weighed down today- legs, heart, arteries – endurance fartleks on a pavement of food training. Heavy, beyond greasy – the pepperonis – the dried up shrooms – the sauce that has no distinction of tomatoes but of – something. Is umami a flavor / taste? Arm tired, brain tired, shouldntve driven drunk
